HOLLY RIDGE — Amari Peele only had three carries for Southside on Friday, but scored on two of them to help the Seahawks to a 48-24 manhandling of Dixon. Four other running backs found the end zone as they picked up their second win in as many tries.
Jamison Bennett struck first with a 10-yard touchdown just over three minutes into the game. The Bulldogs tied the game at 8-8 in the second quarter, but Trajan Rhome answered by scooting in from seven yards out to give Southside a lead it wouldn’t relinquish.
Peele’s 25-yard score with eight second left in the second quarter produced a 22-11 lead at halftime. Dawson McKay added his touch to the game when he scooped up a fumbled ball at Dixon’s own 5-yard line and took it in for the touchdown.
The hosting Bulldogs made it a 10-point game thanks to an 80-yard kickoff return. Southside’s offense came uncorked for three-straight touchdowns to close out the game. Peele exploded for a 49-yard score. Brandon Sullivan and quarterback Will Warren punched in short touchdowns, too.
The Seahawks ran 17 fewer plays than Dixon, but were efficient in averaging 7.9 yards per play. They beat the Bulldogs on the ground, 307-117, to control the game.
Each team turned the ball over three times. Defensively, Southside was able to apply plenty of pressure to the Bulldog signal caller. Jamari Nelson and Quinton Vick combined for three sacks. McKay led the team with three tackles for a loss, and four others had at least two takedowns in the backfield.
The Seahawks travel to Perquimans next week. The Pirates were victims of a fourth-quarter comeback at Northside in Week 1.
