Jaquez Edge, Tarboro’s 230-pound behemoth running back, rushed for three touchdowns as the Vikings steamrolled Washington, 48-0, in the Pam Pack’s home opener on Friday. Deontae Williams scored twice, and two other Vikings also found the end zone.
WATCH: Head coach Jon Blank discusses the loss
Washington mustered just 16 yards of total offense in the first half. Tarboro overwhelmed the Pam Pack in every facet of the game. It caught the Vikings sleeping a bit to start the second half when it came up with its first defensive stop by halting the visitors in the red zone.
The home side picked up its first conversion thanks to a roughing the passer penalty. Washington was able to gain some traction as quarterback Frederick Holscher moved the ball through the air. He connected with junior Tyshawn Roberson for a 9-yard gain that set up Hykeem Ruffin’s short scamper for a first down.
“I thought our offensive line, even though they were physically outmatched, they battled their tails off and did a great job,” coach Jon Blank said. “Then, (Ganeryan) Parker and Hykeem, they did their job. They battled as well as they could. Losing Mike Clark early in the game hurt us a lot with depth.”
Blank said he is “a little worried” about Clark’s knee.
Holscher nailed Uriah Lawrence for 13 yards on the next play. Parker followed that by rumbling for 17 yards into the red zone. Washington couldn’t convert on the scoring opportunity, though, as Holscher was sacked for a loss of four yards. Sophomore Ja’viyes Massenburg intercepted him on the next play.
“I think we found a couple of things that we can beat them on by scheme,” Blank said. “… But then when their players start to play, they easily take away what you want to do by their sheer physicality, speed and their aggressiveness up front.”
The Pam Pack earned all four of their first downs in the game on that one drive.
After Tarboro deferred the opening kickoff to Washington, Lawrence returned the ball to the 45-yard line to give the Pam Pack favorable positioning for the opening drive. Its first two run attempts were stuffed at the line of scrimmage by Tarboro’s massive defensive front. Parker hauled in a 10-yard pass on third-and-12, but Washington opted to have Hunter Hall punt on fourth-and-2.
The Vikings methodically marched into Pam Pack territory. As soon as they crossed midfield, Malik Dickens took off for 34 yards to set up Williams to open the scoring less than six minutes into the game.
From there, Tarboro went on to score on its next four possessions. In the meantime, its defense kept Washington from picking up a first down as the Vikings rolled to a 35-0 lead by halftime.
“That’s a team that, when you look at it, they don’t really have a hole on that team. There’s not a weakness that you can point at,” Blank said. “… We’ve got to play balanced, fundamental football, and they did a better job of that.”
The Pam Pack defense nearly came up with its second-straight stop, but Tarboro managed to convert on a fourth-and-3. Edge, after powering through tackles as he ran to the left, plowed through the mass of humanity in front of him for a 5-yard touchdown.
It pushed the Vikings’ lead to 42-0 and produced a running clock. Following another Pam Pack three-and-out, Ty’trez Higgs tore through Washington’s defense for a 45-yard gain that set up a 7-yard score by Da’Quaris Moore.
Washington now embarks on a two-game road swing. Next week’s game at Conley marks the end of the Pam Pack’s three-game opening stretch that Blank described as “murder’s row.”
