Three candidates, all incumbents, filed to run for re-election Friday, the first day of the filing period for municipal candidates statewide.

The candidates who filed are Washington Mayor Archie Jennings and city Councilmen Gil Davis and Ed Moultrie.

The mayoral and council seats are nonpartisan.

In signing paperwork to make his candidacy official, Moultrie indicated he would spend less than $1,000 on his campaign.

Candidate fundraising has been an issue in the Washington council races, which have been influenced by political action committees’ fundraising in past elections.

The three incumbents filed at the Beaufort County Board of Elections’ offices in Washington.

Those offices will be closed Monday for the Fourth of July holiday and will reopen Tuesday, when more candidates are likely to trickle – or flood – in.

The filing period ends at noon July 15.

Traffic was light at the elections offices Friday, likely because of the approaching holiday, advised Kellie Harris Hopkins, county elections director.

This filing period that was kicked off applies to the towns of Aurora, Bath, Chocowinity, Pantego, the City of Washington and Washington Park, said Anita Bullock Branch, deputy elections director.

As of the close of business at 5 p.m. Friday, no one had filed to run for any seats outside Washington.

“Belhaven’s filing will begin on 12 Noon Monday, July 25th and ends at 12 Noon on Friday, August 12th,” Branch wrote in an email. “There is a $10 filing fee for all offices.”

The elections will be held in November.
