The third week of the football season has often been a time when rivals would get a chance to meet in a non-conference setting. In the last few years, Northside and Southside would clash for the first of two times in the season with this first bout not having 1-A Coastal Plains Conference implications.

While the Seahawks and Panthers will only face off once later on this fall, Washington and Conley are due to add another page to what has been a thrilling series between the Pam Pack and Vikings. Formerly 3-A Coastal Conference foes, the two now meet yearly, alternating sites between Washington and Greenville.

Here’s what Beaufort County’s coaches remember about these rivalry matches from the past:

 

Washington at Conley, 2013

Washington found itself reeling, down 21-0 with about eight minutes to play during its 2013 trip to Conley. Jon Blank, then Pam Pack defensive coordinator, and the defense were able to keep Conley off the scoreboard as Stevie Green scored three touchdowns in the fourth to help Washington win, 28-21. The Pam Pack went on to win 12 games and play in the 2-AA semifinal.

“If you go back and look at the scores from around that year … they were all one-score games that came down to the very last play of the game,” Blank recalled. “That one was the highest point of all those games.”

 

Southside at Northside, 2015

Southside scored twice in the second quarter and pitched a shutout that lasted over 36 minutes to top rival Northside, 22-8, in their first 2015 matchup. Matt Baxter led the way with a pair of touchdowns. Lawrence Brown surpassed the 100-yard rushing mark. Defensively, then-sophomore Brandon Sullivan made his presence felt with seven tackles (six solo).

“Brandon was a kid that … out of this senior group, I think he was the only one we pulled up to varsity as a freshman,” Carrow said. “We knew he had a high potential to be a good athlete. We had a need that year, definitely, for a linebacker. Coach (Andrea) Quinerly wanted to go ahead and groom him there.”

 

Northside at Southside, 2016

After a series of losses to local rival Southside in the years before, Northside was able to get its comeuppance in its first clash with the Seahawks last year. Turnovers plagued the Panthers a bit, but their defense didn’t let Southside cash in on them and Jackson Midgette was able to run for a pair of touchdowns in the 23-6 win. It was part of Northside’s 4-0 start to the year.

“Our defense did a great job not allowing those fumbles to turn into points for Southside,” coach Keith Boyd said after the game. “We’ve got a resilient group. They’re a tight-knit group.”
