Make a plane; make a boat — all summer, children have flocked to the Historic Bath State Historic Site to create a take-home project and learn a little history as part of the sites’ First Saturdays series.

“It’s just something different; something fun,” said Erica Smith, assistant manager at Historic Bath. “All the kids who’ve come through have really enjoyed it.”

This Saturday, they’re at it again. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., children are invited to learn about the meanings of flags through the ages, including those pirates used, visit the “Let’s Go Fly a Kite” exhibit and create their own pirate flag kite.

Each First Saturdays project goes hand-in-hand with the historic site’s current exhibit. The events serve both as something for kids to do on a Saturday and as a learning experience.

“’Let’s Go Fly a Kite’ is all about the history of kites, different kinds of kites. There’s a couple of things I didn’t even know about kites,” Smith said, adding that kites were once used by spies to deliver messages.

Smith said the programs have been popular throughout the summer. October’s program will include making a mask, in honor of Halloween, and the finale will be a special event Nov. 4 at the Bonner House. Local storytellers will regale listeners with folklore and legends, and s’mores are also on the agenda for the evening.

“We’ll actually have a campfire down at the Bonner House,” Smith said. “And that’s where we’re going to end (the First Saturdays series), and we’ll pick back up again in March.”

First Saturdays programs are free and no reservation is necessary. The “Let’s Go Fly a Kite” exhibit will be on display throughout the month of September at the Historic Bath State Historic Site Visitor Center, located at 207 Carteret St. in Bath. The visitor center is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call 252-923-3971.
