Southside hammers Perquimans, 61-0, to improve to 3-0

HERTFORD — Southside coach Jeff Carrow said the Seahawks are “not perfect by any means.” Well, Thursday’s 61-0 drubbing of Perquimans was as close to a perfect game as anyone can get. They scored on offense, defense, and special teams to cruise to their third-straight win to start the season.

The traveling Seahawks were making plays right out of the gate. They recovered an onside kick on the opening kickoff. Senior Jamison Bennett ripped off a 31-yard run shortly after, setting up fellow senior Brandon Sullivan to punch in a 1-yard touchdown to open scoring just 1:31 into the game.
“We knew we were probably going to be able to get on the edge a little bit,” Carrow said. “We thought we might be able to, defensively, have a decent game. We knew they were going to sling the ball around a little bit.”
Perquimans had moderate success passing the ball on its first drive, but turned it over on downs at Southside’s 40-yard line. The Seahawks easily pieced together a 60-yard scoring drive. This time, it was Jamari Nelson’s 20-yard run that put Sullivan within striking distance for his second touchdown — this one from 10 yards out.
Southside’s defense then made short work of the hosting Pirates. After forcing a three-and-out and a punt, quarterback Will Warren hit Amari Peele for a 40-yard touchdown on the next offensive play.
Peele found the end zone again on a 10-yard run to give Southside a 27-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Seahawks continued to soar in the second. Grant Jensen came up with an interception on the left side of the field and reversed the field to return it 41 yards for a touchdown.
Perquimans, again, was forced to punt after just three plays. Southside needed just two plays to cover 65 yards on the ensuing drive. Nelson scurried for 27 yards, and Yahkiel White followed that with a 38-yard dash into the end zone. Jonquil Haywood added a touchdown of his own before halftime.
“A lot of these guys, they bust their butt every day in practice for us. Sometimes they don’t get a chance to get on the field as much as the starters do,” Carrow said. “It gave (the backups) a chance to get out here, show a little love to them, go out there and execute and work as a unit. It just makes us better as a team.”
The Pirates pieced together their best drive to the point late in the first half. Dwuan Williams Jr. took a delayed handoff and put Perquimans close enough to take a last-second shot, but Shamari Walters broke up the throw deep to the left side of the end zone.
Perquimans seemed energetic coming out of the intermission. Williams drilled David Vines on the kickoff return and Southside, with freshman Hundley Stallings running the offense, was forced to punt for the first time.
Southside’s defense continued to stand tall, though. Coordinator Andrea Quinerly challenged the Seahawks to preserve the shutout in the second half. They did more than that. Pirate quarterback Mason Votava dropped back to throw deep in his own territory, but was sacked at the 1-yard line by Quinton Vick and Trajan Rhome. On the next play, Rhome made a stop in the end zone for a safety.
Now leading 49-0, Southside added onto it with Demetrius Ebron’s 68-yard return for a touchdown on the ensuing kickoff. Jensen scored again — this time on offense — in the fourth.
The lopsided win propels Southside into a three-game homestand that begins with Gates County next week.
