An elderly man and a 10-year-old girl were killed in separate car accidents within an hour of one another in Beaufort County on Friday morning.

In Washington, a minivan and a Jeep collided on U.S. Highway 264 near Lizzard Slip Road, at 8:10 a.m. At 8:53 a.m., another accident happened in front of Crisp RV Center on U.S. Highway 17 in Chocowinity.

Both accidents victims were pronounced dead at the scene, according to authorities.

In Washington, the driver of a Honda minivan traveling east on U.S. 264 attempted to make a left turn onto Lizzard Slip Road and turned into the path of a westbound Jeep Wrangler. The van was struck on its right rear passenger-side door, killing the 10-year-old girl, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Chocowinity EMS responded to the scene of the Chocowinity accident, in which 71-year-old Johnny Roberson, of Chocowinity, who was driving a scooter, was killed after a collision with an oncoming pickup truck.

“Witness statements said a small Ford Ranger was traveling north on 17 business route in Chocowinity and a small moped was on the northbound side, on the shoulder at the side. The moped attempted to make a U-turn to go south, and he pulled out in front of the truck,” said Highway Patrol Trooper Justin Locklear. “I don’t think he saw him. Or he may have thought he had some distance or time to get around him.”

Locklear said charges may be pending for the Chocowinity accident, but further investigation needs to be done.

The name of the deceased in the Washington accident had not been released.

Locklear said it’s rare for Beaufort County to have two such severe accidents so close together.

“It’s been a heck of morning,” Locklear said.
