Michael Warren ran in for a 4-yard touchdown — his second of four Saturday afternoon — to give the 10U Chocowinity Indians a 16-6 lead over the Washington Colts with less than a minute left in the first half.
Warren and the Indians ran at will, and their defense contained Washington in their 30-12 win. The Colts, hoping to even their record at 1-1, stumbled out of the gate. They had more flags against them than they ran offensive plays in the first quarter, but capitalized on a broken play to close the gap going into halftime.
Washington had little time to answer before the break. Knowing that Chocowinity was set to receive the second-half kickoff, Jamel Corey caught the Indians’ defense sleeping as he ripped off a long touchdown run just 26 seconds after his side gave up its second score of the half.
Chocowinity needed just a few key plays to put the game away in the third quarter. Warren rumbled for 20 yards on the first play of the second half before being brought down by Washington’s Korbyn Montgomery and Isiah Ragaglia. The Colts’ defensive line stood tall to put Chocowinity in a third-and-6 scenario, but Warren picked up a block from Chaise Smith to run in from 26 yards out.
“That’s your touchdown,” Chocowinity’s coaches told Smith after the play.
Washington, with 4:50 left in the third and starting its next series in Indian territory, quickly fumbled the ball away. Daylan Hardy got downfield to immediately but Chocowinity in the red zone. Even though the Indians faced a fourth-and-6 after a false start, Warren was able to move the chains to set up his fourth score of the game — this one from four yards away.
The Colts got the ball to start the game, but coughed it up on a fumble. The Indians started on Washington’s side of the field and ate up about five minutes of the clock as they marched down the field.
After Warren ran down into the red zone, Smith pushed through for a third-down conversion. Gabe Kassnove, who ran the Indian offense to near perfection, kept for an 8-yard gain, and Washington was flagged for a facemask penalty to give Chocowinity first-and-goal. That positioned Warren to open the scoring with a 3-yard scamper.
