BELHAVEN — A group of Belhaven businesses is putting its own spin on a big city fashion show.

Coming up Saturday at 4 p.m., downtown businesses will host “Belhaven’s Got Style,” a fashion show at the town docks on Water Street.

The event will showcase clothing and shoes for men, women and children, as well as appetizers and drinks from local restaurants. Downtown shops will remain open until 9 p.m., and Michael Dunn is set to perform after the show, according to a press release.

Shops featured in the show include: Attic Life, Market 32, Cole and Baby, Handpicked Sister, Sarah’s of Belhaven, Pound Puppy, T&L Variety and Southern Tuck. One Stop Hair Salon and Shear Elegance Salon are assisting with hair and makeup for the fashion show.

“Every business in downtown Belhaven is participating in some way,” said Nicole O’Neal, owner of Market 32 and an organizer of the event.

Saturday’s show is one of fun, but it also has a deeper meaning. O’Neal called it “a celebration of our unity and commitment to the revitalization of the town.”

Downtown Belhaven is growing and has plans to continue to do so. In the past six months, four new stores have opened in that area, according to O’Neal.

“Hopefully the public will gain a sense of what a special community Belhaven really is. The Instagram hashtag we have been using has been #communityovercompetition,” said Amy Powell Johnson, owner of Handpicked Sister. “Each shop involved has something unique to offer, and of course, we are looking to boost our individual businesses, but we also realize ‘the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.’”

Johnson said she thinks a combination of food and fashion at a fun event is something that will bring people together. The downtown business owners believe they can achieve more success when working together, she said.

“Our love for Belhaven and wanting to see our town prosper is our real motivation and the unifying point of this event,” Johnson said.

The “Belhaven’s Got Style” fashion show is scheduled for Saturday at 4 p.m. at the town docks/gazebo on Water Street. Admission is free, and seating will be available. Rain location is Spoon River Artworks and Market.
