Beaufort County’s football teams haven’t earned a win in the last two weeks. Washington and Northside came close last week, but each lost by one possession. Southside, for the second week in a row, played one of the top 1-A teams in the east.

Wins are needed this week. The Pam Pack is at the point where it needs to win out to extend its campaign past the regular season. That task begins Friday when it welcomes North Lenoir.

Southside hits the road to take on a Pamlico County team its had the better of in the past few years.

With Northside idle this week, here is what Washington coach Jon Blank and Southside coach Jeff Carrow remember about earning needed wins in the past.

North Pitt at Washington, 2016

One year ago today, fans got a glimpse of exactly what the Pam Pack was capable of with its passing game. Frederick Holscher — then a junior who had only about two months beforehand been thrown into the starting role — and Nazzir Hardy teamed up for the game-winning play as the first half came to an end. Holscher hit Hardy deep, who exploded for a 49-yard touchdown down the left sideline. It was the difference in a 21-19 win. It was the peak of the season as Washington went to lose its last two en route to a 3-9 finish.

“That was a difference maker for us because we had worked on throwing the ball more effectively to compliment our run attack,” Blank said. “Also, we were seeing our run defense struggles catching up with us, so we knew we needed to score more points. That touchdown and win gave us hope to finish the season strong.”

 

Southside at Jones Senior, 2013

Southside’s last losing season was 2013. The Seahawks had to scratch and claw for any wins in what ended up as a 3-9 campaign. They scored 30 points in the first half at Jones Senior in what was their second conference game of the year. Lawrence Brown’s 14-yard scoring run and subsequent 2-point conversion proved enough in the 38-34 win. The Trojans, also desperate for a win, drove down to the Southside 8-yard line, but a Seahawk defender rejected the pass attempt to the corner of the end zone.

“We wound up putting a score together right there at the end of the half. I think it was a wheel route at the end of the half, Carrow said. “… They played us well. It’s a tough place to play. … Every game is a must win for us. We go into it like that. Our philosophy is one game at a time. Next man up.”
