BATH — Free tours of historic houses and special activities for children were part of last weekend’s “Museum Day Live!” festivities in Bath.

Visitors were treated to quill writing lessons, firing demonstrations and opportunities to “unplug” and play with colonial era toys during Historic Bath State Site’s most recent public event, according to site manager Chris Umfleet.

 

An added attraction was the chance to view the “It’s Revolutionary!” traveling exhibit courtesy of the North Carolina Archives.

 

“It has some of the original pre-Revolutionary documents that basically laid the foundation for us to break away from the king,” Umfleet noted. He contributed five original Stamp Act dice on loan from his personal collection for the day.

The day’s festivities ended with “Music on the Point,” an evening celebration complete with live music, food and beverages held on Bonner’s Point.

The Sept. 23 event was part of Historic Bath’s efforts to increase the number of visitors to the site.

“We’re really becoming more of a destination point,” Umfleet said.

Visitors and local residents alike will find several reasons to make the trek to Historic Bath this fall, according to Umfleet.

First up is this weekend’s maintenance project at the Bonner House. Volunteers are welcome to assist with the Sept. 30 event, which includes painting, cleaning and a general sprucing up of the circa 1835 property.

The site will host the “Bath Towne After Dark” ghost and history walk Oct. 13-14, and a child-friendly Halloween event is planned for Oct. 31.

“It will be a ‘spook free’ zone with candy and crafts,” Umfleet said.
