Washington made a splash when Tyshawn Roberson returned the opening kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown. Friday’s homecoming game was one in which the team that made one fewer mistake would come out on top. Micheal Webb made sure that team was Ayden-Grifton.

Webb caught a 24-yard touchdown from Charger quarterback Blake McLawhorn to go ahead, 39-34, and leave the Pam Pack with just a minute to respond. Washington signal caller Frederick Holscher looked to the air, but was picked off by Webb. The Chargers took a knee to run the clock out and seal the 5-point win.

Ayden-Grifton responded to Washington’s immediate touchdown with a pair of first-quarter touchdowns from junior Ray Darden.

After Darden’s second touchdown put the Pam Pack behind, 14-7, Hykeem Ruffin answered with a 66-yard explosion on the following play.

The two defenses settled in after a four-touchdown first period. Calvin Brown scored from 8 yards out to give Ayden-Grifton a 21-13 lead at halftime.

Ruffin used a burst of speed to close the gap again. He capped off a nine-play drive with a 51-yard dash into the end zone. Holscher followed suit with a 21-yard scramble that put Washington back on top, 27-21, with 1:17 left in the third quarter.

The Chargers had short scores by Darden and McLawhorn to pull ahead, 33-27, by the end of the third. Ruffin came back to punch in his third touchdown of the game, giving Washington a 34-33 lead with 3:15 left, but Ayden-Grifton marched down for a last-minute touchdown.
