A mother and son have been charged with cocaine trafficking in Washington.

Investigators with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office Drug Unit arrested Rodney Albritton Jr., 28, and Teresa Blount, 53, both of East Seventh Street in Washington on Friday. Albritton has been charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana, trafficking in cocaine, possession of drug paraphernalia and driving while license revoked, while Blount was charged with trafficking in cocaine, maintaining a dwelling for keeping and selling a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to a press release from Lt. Russell Davenport, head of the drug unit.

Davenport said when investigators received information that Albritton was involved in the distribution of the drugs, they made a series of purchases of cocaine from him. After getting a search warrant for Albitton’s mother’s house on East Seventh Street, they found about 35 rams of cocaine, digital scales, material used to package the drugs and a small amount of marijuana, the press release stated.

“We found cocaine in her bedroom, and also cocaine in the kitchen area,” Davenport said. “I hate to say it, but it’s a common practice for people to hide stuff at house where they don’t think we will search.”

Davenport said while the drug unit’s work recently has centered on the sale of illegal opioids, investigators continue to go after those selling other drugs.

“We still work cocaine cases, marijuana cases, meth, crack cocaine. Our attention has been focused on the most dangerous things going on, which has been the overdoses on the heroin and pills,” Davenport said. “You’ve got to prioritize the cases.”

Both Albritton and Blount were confined in the Beaufort County Detention Center — Albritton under a $150,000 bond; Blount, a $50,000 bond.
