Annual fundraiser a calling from God

“Spin the wheel; get a deal! Everybody wins!”
You guessed it — Joseph Savage is back in action with his campaign to raise money to purchase turkeys and hams for the Zion Shelter and Kitchen to use over the holidays.
It’s the Washington resident’s fifth-annual fundraiser, and he’ll be out at the Piggly Wiggly on River Road at least once a week for the next month or so. Residents can stop by, and with a donation, try their hand at the “Wheel Deal,” which features prizes from various businesses in town.
“I’ve got a lot of stuff,” Savage said. “I’ve got a lot of great participation from the business owners around town.”
According to Savage, some of this year’s prizes include: free oil changes from local dealerships and mechanics; gift certificates from downtown restaurants and shops; haircuts and hair products from Washington salons; among several others.
“I do it for Thanksgiving and Christmas, so I need money for both of the holidays,” Savage said. “I even had some people just donate, just because.”
Last year’s fundraiser covered the cost of 15 turkeys, five turkey breasts and 10 hams for the shelter, which Savage personally delivered during the holidays.
His motivation not only comes from a desire to help others, but also from what he views as a calling from God.
A passage from the Book of Matthew, chapter 25, verse 40, speaks to Savage: “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’”
That’s what keeps him coming back every year — not to mention a desire to set a good example for his family, as well.
Savage said he would continue the fundraiser as long as he is able, and he might partner with the future shelter for women and children in Washington.
“It’s tiresome, but you know, somebody has got to do it. I’m just glad that God chose me … and gave me the strength and the energy and the know-how,” Savage said.
Joseph Savage and his “Wheel Deal” will be set up at Piggly Wiggly on River Road on Thursday, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The public is invited to stop by and donate.
