How to Start a Business with Brian Cooke

This class will evaluate whether participants are ready to start a business. The class will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of new businesses. Participants will learn about taxes, licenses and maintaining objectivity with their plans. This free session will take place Monday at 6 p.m.

Making a Carolina Snowflake

Carolina Snowflakes are woven ornaments that are great for holiday decorating and gift giving. Students will learn to make these charming ornaments and get ahead of the holiday rush. Each participant will make at least two snowflakes of woven rush, and probably more. They are easy and satisfying objects to weave, and students will enjoy making them at home later on. The $25 class will provide all the materials. It will take place Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Managing Stress and Preventing Burnout (for Current and Prospective Small Business Owners)

Emily Ballance will show participants how to put enthusiasm back into their work and into their employees. Students will learn to recognize early signs of stress and burnout and address them quickly. They will leave with new strategies for self-care, a plan for a healthier lifestyle and 25 tips to help decrease stress. This free class will take place Wednesday from 2-5 p.m.

How to Write a Business Plan with Brian Cooke

Starting a small business is a huge step for anyone. This class will help students with the fundamentals of writing a business plan. A business plan is the foundation for success when making a decision to start a new business or acquire an existing business. A business plan is key when it comes to seeking funds for a business. Topics discussed include: the executive summary, describing a business, conducting marketing research and analysis and marketing the business. The workshop is free and runs from 6-8 p.m. Nov. 6.

Field Trip: NCMA Ebony Fashion Flair

The exhibit “Inspiring Beauty” at the N.C. Museum of Art tells the remarkable story of an extraordinary fashion show. The exhibition explores the 50-year history of the Ebony Fashion Fair (1958–2009), an unparalleled charity fashion show that redefined the concepts of beauty, style and empowerment for African-Americans. That Tuesday, Jeff Phipps, retired professor of costuming at East Carolina University, will give the class insights into couture fashion. He will explain why it is important to clothing decisions we all make. On that Thursday, the class will travel to Raleigh for a docent lead tour of the exhibit. Participants have lunch reservations at Iris, the museum’s restaurant. Afterward there is time to explore the museum’s reinstalled African exhibits in the East Building. Participants will pay for their own meal. All other expenses are included. The $75 class will take place Nov. 7 from 6-8 p.m. and all day Nov. 9 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

 

WASHINGTON COUNTY CAMPUS

The following classes are available at the Washington County Center in Roper through the Continuing Education Department at BCCC. Beginning Microsoft Excel

This class will include introductions and Excel basics. BCCC Small Business Center Director Lentz Stowe will lead students through creating a worksheet, formatting the worksheet, basic formulas and functions, creating an embedded chart and file management. Students will also learn how to save and print a worksheet. This free class will take place Oct. 30 from 3-5 p.m.

Critical Incident Preparation and Response

Todd Alligood will share his expertise and perspective on this very serious subject. Students will learn how to make their workplaces safer. He will explain what to do if a critical incident, like an active shooter, occurs on or near a workplace. Alligood will take students through the right way to summon help, protect employees and clients, should something happen. Such preparation can help contain a crisis. This free class will take place Monday from 6-9 p.m.
