Grading Out: Panthers, Seahawks stars battle in Anchor Bowl

There was one game on the Week 10 slate for Beaufort County.

It was a big one. Northside took a short trip across the county to Chocowinity. The Panthers and Southside met for the first time in over a year. On top of the Anchor Bowl trophy, the two teams were also competing for a chance to finish behind Tarboro in the 1-A Coastal Plains Conference.

Northside won the game, 16-12, to bring the trophy back to Panther territory for the first time since 2013. They did so on the back of resilient defense and hard-nosed running.

Here are the Week 10 standouts from the Northside-Southside clash:

CAMERON CAHOON, NORTHSIDE

Northside knew that Cameron Cahoon would be a large component of its defense this season. He helped lead the Panthers as they stymied Southside’s red-zone opportunities throughout the Anchor Bowl. He had the stop that punctuated a stand with the Seahawks inside Northside’s 5-yard line.

Cahoon also continued to run the ball hard. He only had his number called to rush four times, but managed to score a 7-yard touchdown on one of his touches. He made an impact just about everywhere he was.

TRAJAN RHOME, SOUTHSIDE

Another week, another game that Trajan Rhome rushed for game-high yardage. The Southside senior toted the ball 16 times for 112 yards (seven yards per carry). Unfortunately for the Seahawks, he accounted for all but 42 yards of the team’s rushing output.

It was an off showing for a Southside backfield as deep as it is. Rhome has consistently been a leader in the ground attack, but rarely has to shoulder the offensive production. Brandon Sullivan only had one carry and only one other Seahawk ran more than five times.

RAYDARIUS FREEMAN, NORTHSIDE

Raydarius Freeman kept fighting through lingering bumps and bruises to make his presence felt at Southside. The senior fullback ripped off a 17-yard run that capped off Northside’s game-opening drive, then punched in the 2-point conversion to put the Panthers ahead, 8-0, just over four minutes in.

Freeman finished the game with 63 yards rushing, which ranked second on the team behind Johnathan Clark’s 66. He also made valuable contributions on defense.

WILL WARREN, SOUTHSIDE

Will Warren got to use his arm to catch Northside off guard on Friday. The junior quarterback completed six passes for 99 yards. He helped produce one of the game’s highlights when he found tight end Hunter Tyler for 41 yards. He also had a 32-yard hookup with Demetrius Ebron.

Warren rolled out and ran in a 6-yard touchdown to give the Seahawks the lead with 4:44 left in the third quarter. Although Southside couldn’t make the comeback, Warren did admirably distributing the ball under the pressure of having the clock against him.
