It’s almost that time of year — a time that most supporters of the Humane Society of Beaufort County know as the annual auction.

On Nov. 4, the Humane Society of Beaufort County will hold its 23rd Annual Auction; a fundraiser Marty Poffenberger, HSBC president, said is vital to the success of the organization.

“It is our biggest fundraiser of the year. We count on it heavily to fund the majority of our annual budget,” she said.

The fundraiser helps contribute to the primary mission of the Humane Society — the spay and neuter program. Poffenberger said the group works tirelessly to make certain that 100 percent of the animals at the Betsy Bailey Nelson Animal Control Facility are spayed and neutered before they are adopted. Without this event, the support of local businesses and residents, that mission becomes more difficult.

There will be a silent and live auction as well as a very popular raffle table, according to Poffenberger. She said they have artwork, pet-related items, jewelry, rocking chairs, quilts and wall hangings, as well as many generous donations from local businesses. She said the event has attracted lots of “regulars” over the years, but whether it’s one’s first time or 23^rd time, it’s always been a blast.

“It really is a lot of fun. The people that know that come year after year. It’s a great evening and, of course, for a great cause,” Poffenberger said.

Poffenberger has been involved with the event since it started 23 years ago; and has undoubtedly seen it evolve, but even more so, she’s seen continued success and support from Beaufort County. She said there are a lot of people who work extremely hard together to make the auction happen, and there are many businesses who donate their time and materials to the cause.
“I think that because we do have community that cares about animals and doesn’t mind donating their time and money or products. It continues to be a success every year,” she said.

The Annual Auction is at the Washington Civic Center on 110 Gladden St. at 6 p.m. Tickets are $35 each, or can be purchased as a table of 10 for $300. For more information, call 252-946-1551.
