Throwback Thursday: Blank, Carrow know Week 11 foes well

Washington coach Jon Blank and Southside coach Jeff Carrow are quite familiar with their new league opponents. The Pam Pack is new to the 2-A Eastern Carolina Conference and the Seahawks welcome South Creek into the 1-A Coastal Plains Conference.
The two have seen their Friday-night foes plenty in the past, though. Southside has played South Creek in non-conference action. Washington has also met Kinston plenty outside of the league slate.
Northside travels to Jones Senior this week. The Panthers and Trojans have been mainstays in the 1-A Coastal Plains.
Here’s what local coaches remember about past encounters with their Week 11 opponents:
Kinston at Washington, 2014
Kinston traveled to Washington twice during the Pam Pack’s 2014 journey to the state-championship game. Washington downed the Vikings 21-0 in non-conference and then 30-0 in the second round of the playoffs that season. Junior Rayekwon Satterwaithe was strong in each game. He had a 25-yard touchdown catch in the first meeting, then rushed for two touchdowns in the playoff win.
“They were good and athletic, but we matched up well with them,” Blank recalled. “We had two of our better games that season against Kinston. They’ve kept their coaching staff around for several years now and they’re experiencing success because of their continuity.”
South Creek at Southside, 2016
Southside travels to South Creek on Friday to wrap up its regular season. The Seahawks and Cougars played each other during the non-conference portion of the season and again in the first round of the playoffs. The Seahawks took the first meeting in blowout fashion, 41-16. The second was a defensive struggle. Kyle Hill ran for 86 yards and Brandon Sullivan scored the only touchdown in an 8-0 win. The Seahawks’ defense held South Creek to just 112 rushing yards.
“Corrections. When we played them (the first time), it was a little bit of a different story,” Carrow said. “Then they made corrections. They really showed up to play here. Coach (Will) Harrell does an awesome job there with those guys.”
Northside at Jones Senior, 2016
Jones Senior nearly rallied from a double-digit halftime deficit against Northside last season. The Trojans tied the game at 12 apiece, but Matthew Marslender kept on an option play and ripped off a 43-yard touchdown run to take the lead with 40 seconds left. Marslender was the backup to Jackson Midgette, who eluded a tackle in the backfield to reverse the field and score one of the Panthers’ other touchdowns. Kenan Wilkinson had the other of the three scores.
“Our kids are resilient, and we were able to get a late score on a great read (by Marslender),” Northside coach Keith Boyd said after the game.
