The New Mission Class at 15^th Street Church of God focuses on what its members can do — not on what they can’t.

Now in its 21^st year, the class is a group of adults with intellectual and/or physical disabilities, ranging in age from 31 to 89. When the class first started in 1996, there were only three members, and now there are a total of 24.

New Mission is not a class focused on disabilities, though. It’s about the members’ abilities, one of which the class will showcase in a few days.

The second-annual “Singspiration” is slated for Sunday at 6 p.m., and the New Mission Class has prepared an hour-long program of songs from all seasons.

“We’re going to sing some songs that you would sing at Thanksgiving,” class leader Terry Conner said, adding that there will be Christmas, praise and congregational favorites sung, as well. Conner and Shelby Hodges together head up the class.

Conner was inspired to create the New Mission Class in honor of her daughter, who had Down syndrome and passed away at the age of 24. Spending those 24 years with her daughter — who she called a “gift of God” — opened her eyes to the necessity for a Sunday school class for those with special needs.

“I learned that everybody has an ability to do something,” Conner said. “I guess my daughter is what keeps bringing me back.”

Last year, the class began its “Singspiration” tradition in honor of its 20^th anniversary. Conner said the performance received positive feedback, not to mention the church’s ongoing support of the class itself.

“The church is very loving and supportive,” Conner said. “This is still being done in (Missy’s) legacy.”

Sunday night, the public is invited to come out and see just what all these singers have to offer.

The New Mission Class’ “Singspiration” is scheduled for Sunday at 6 p.m. at 15^th Street Church of God, 336 E. 15^th St., Washington. There is no cost to attend.
