Local artists give Santa a helping hand

Artists whose work can be seen in several small galleries and studios in downtown Washington are giving Santa a little help in the gift-giving department this holiday season.

Their creations would go wonderfully under the Christmas tree, and shoppers can be assured they are getting a one-of-a-kind gift for the loved ones on their list.

One such elf is Valda Belyeu, whose sterling silver rings set with natural stones, crystals and small ceramic pieces can be found at Riverwalk Gallery. She said she likes the idea of art as holiday gifts.

“I love to give pieces of art for Christmas because it’s more personal,” she said. “It’s about giving someone something that has been made with lots of heart.”

Kay Woolard, who operates Art on Market, agrees that original works of art make the most memorable gifts, even to oneself.

“People do buy for themselves, but they also love to surprise their significant other with a piece they know they’ll like,” she said.

The front window of Woolard’s gallery/studio is adorned with dozens of blown glass orbs in various sizes, shapes and colors; all were created by glass artist Chip Shackelford.

“The sparkle of glass makes a great enhancement for anybody, particularly this time of year,” Woolard noted.

Art on Market offers a hard-to-resist incentive for holiday shoppers, as well. Woolard invites those making a minimum purchase to select a note card from her special Christmas tree. Each card contains a discount coupon that can be used toward that purchase.

“It’s kind of a Christmas gift from me to my customers,” she said with a smile.

KEEPSAKE: Jerry Robinson Bradley’s pet portraits are a favorite gift idea; her work, including people portraits too, can be seen at Lemonade Art Gallery on Main Street.
