Northside became the first Beaufort County team to make its foray into league competition Friday when it traveled to new 1-A Coastal Plains Conference foe Riverside. Both the Panthers and Lady Panthers stumbled in their opener.

Washington and Southside will play their first conference basketball games this coming week. Like Northside, both will open on the road.

Washington wrestling continued to roll through its competition. It won last weekend’s Pierce Davis Tournament at North Pitt and had a fantastic showing at Croatan’s Beast of the East.

Here are the standout athletes:

 

RASHOD SMITH, NORTHSIDE

Friday’s conference opener at Riverside was as funky as they come. The Panthers led the Knights, 37-29, at halftime. The visitors from Beaufort County were poised to make a run late in the second quarter when Riverside’s scoreboard went out.

A 10-minute break may have disrupted momentum. The game resumed with referees keeping time on the court as Northside ended up falling short, 65-63, in their first loss of the season. Rashod Smith did all he could with a 23-point night.

 

CARSON ASBY, WASHINGTON

Washington wrestling has manhandled nearly every opponent it has run into early in the season. The Pam Pack has consistently put out a deep squad, and this year is no different.

There are still a few undefeated Pam Pack wrestlers left as their match counts are approaching 20. Carson Asby is one of them. The senior, wrestling at 126 pounds, was undefeated heading into finals at Croatan’s Beast of the East tournament. Asby and Washington host their first conference matches this week.

 

SYMONE RUFFIN, SOUTHSIDE

Southside’s girls picked up their first win of the season and did so in convincing fashion. The Lady Seahawks romped Mattamuskeet on the road, 63-18, behind a 20-point effort from senior guard Symone Ruffin.

Fellow senior Michaela Dixon added 10. Getting the first win under their belts was crucial to a Southside team that won’t play a home game until the New Year. Ruffin and the Lady Seahawks face a lofty challenge when they open conference competition at Pamlico County on Tuesday.

 

IVORY MOORE, SOUTHSIDE

Senior Demetrius Ebron’s 17 points may have led Southside as it earned its first win of the season — 75-46 at Mattamuskeet. Ebron was oftentimes without help last year, but has been getting plenty from Ivory Moore early in the season.

Moore, a 6-foot-4 sophomore forward, added 14 points in the win. He and Will Warren tied for second in scoring behind Ebron. The Seahawks will face a tough task in their CPC opener at Pamlico County on Tuesday.

 

KIZORIA REDMOND, WASHINGTON

Washington guard Kizoria Redmond had shown plenty of talent last season. Those glimpses have become much more consistent as of late. The Lady Pack junior used her shooting to help curb the loss of guard Tierra Wiggins in a close loss to North Pitt this past week.

Redmond and Cyntavea Blackledge have both shown confidence shooting the ball in recent outings. That should make the Lady Pack a potent group once Wiggins is back in the fold.
