Southside recovers with win at Columbia

COLUMBIA — Southside outlasted hosting Columbia, 78-70, on Thursday to level its record at 2-2 and thrust it into a Friday-night matchup at Jones Senior.

Sophomore point guard Zack Green led the Seahawks with 20 points. Junior Will Warren had 19, and senior Demetrius Ebron added 16. The win comes two days after being romped, 71-40, at Pamlico County.

Southside will look to keep the ball rolling at the Northside Holiday Tournament beginning Monday. The Seahawks will main event the opening day against Beaufort County and 1-A Coastal Plains Conference rival Northside. That game is slated for 7:30 p.m.

 

Lady Seahawks soar past Columbia

COLUMBIA — Seniors Michaela Dixon and Symone Ruffin combined for 45 points as Southside dropped Columbia, 60-35, on Thursday. It put the Lady Seahawks back in the win column after being overwhelmed at Pamlico County two days prior.

Both Dixon (23 points, 10 rebounds) and Ruffin (22 points, 13 steals) notched a double-double in the victory.

Freshmen Delaney Ayers and Sarah Petty excelled on the glass with seven rebounds apiece. Senior Danielle Ruffin, while held without a field goal, contributed with seven boards and a pair of assists.

Southside moved on to play at Jones Senior on Friday. The Lady Seahawks will take part in South Creek’s Christmas Tournament after the Christmas break.

 

Pungo girls successful against Epiphany

BELHAVEN — Home cooking proved successful for Pungo’s girls team when they hosted Epiphany on Thursday. Both the junior-varsity and varsity Lady Raiders won their games while the boys were handed non-conference defeats.

The varsity girls were dominant as Riley Cutler, Rebecca Hodges and Brinson Edmundson turned in double-digit performances to fuel a 53-21 win.

The JV Lady Raiders had Josie Hudnell, Emma Williams and Hayley Elliot combine for 25 points in a 37-12 win.

The varsity boys got 16 apiece from Chandler Cuthrell and Ryan Bishop, but that wasn’t enough in a 68-61 loss. Devin Cadle’s 12 points also weren’t enough in a 64-28 loss for the JV boys.
