Mrs. Martha Alligood McRoy, age 83, a lifelong resident of Chocowinity, NC died Saturday July 2, 2011 at Carolina East Medical Center of New Bern, NC.
A funeral service will be held 3:00 PM Wednesday July 6, 2011 at First Baptist Church of Chocowinity officiated by Dr. Richard Sheriff.  Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery.  Van Dixon, Jay Houston, Arnold Moore, Kenneth Beaman, J. D. Edwards and Jesse Powers, who are Deacons at First Baptist Church will serve as pallbearers.
Mrs. McRoy was born in Beaufort County on December 9, 1927 daughter of the late Jarvis Daniel Alligood and the late Lena Willis Alligood.  She attended Washington High School and married George Mayhew McRoy on December 19, 1943. He preceded her in death on March 8, 1998.  Mrs. McRoy was a homemaker who also worked at Hamilton Beach, Sampson’s Shirt Factory and assisted on the family farm.  She was a faithful lifelong member of First Baptist Church of Chocowinity where she served as Deaconess for several years, was a former Sunday School teacher, a choir member and a member of WMU for several years.
Survivors include a daughter: Ann McRoy of Greenville; two sons: Dan McRoy and his wife Carol of New Bern and Phil McRoy and his wife Becky of Bath; three sisters: Emily Alligood Stewart of Milton, FL, Mary Alligood Toler of Blount’s Creek and Ruth Alligood Lane of Williamsburg, Virginia; four grandchildren and six great grandchildren.  Mrs. McRoy is also survived by William Albert “Billy” Hodges of Jacksonville, FL, who was raised in her parent’s home and who she considered her brother.
The family will receive friends 2:00 PM Wednesday until the funeral hour at First Baptist Church of Chocowinity.
