Inner Banks Hotline offers this advice to persons in an abusive relationship.
The holidays are often a time of joy and community, but for people in abusive relationships, the holidays can be stressful and dangerous, according to Inner Banks Hotline.
Spending time with family and friends, dealing with financial stress and traveling can make safety planning a challenge.
Family and friends of survivors may also struggle to find ways to help or be supportive.
IBX Hotline offers a few suggestions for survivors and friends or family of survivors for making the holidays feel safer.
Communication: Reaching out to family and friends can be an important step in healing. It can help to discuss safe times and ways to communicate. Consider times during the day when the survivor is typically away from their abusive partner to call, email or text rather than call.
Traveling Safely: If you are traveling with your abusive partner, consider making a plan for your emotional safety. What this looks like can differ from person to person, but it might include books, music or other favorite activities that calm you and/or the abuser.
Planning for Visits: A survivor knows best what will help them feel safe, so consider discussing ways to make parties or family visits safer. For example, if alcohol tends to worsen an abusive partner’s behavior, ask if non-alcoholic beverages can be served.
Practice Self-Care: Taking time for your health and wellness can make a big difference in how you feel. Making sure basic needs are met is the foundation of self-care. Do you get adequate sleep? Do you eat regular meals? Is physical activity part of your daily life? For some people, meeting these basic needs might not be possible all at once, so it might be helpful to focus on one at a time.
