WHS baseball field torn up by joyriders

Washington High School’s baseball field was vandalized on Friday night, according to head coach Kevin Leggett. The damage was done by vandal or vandals riding around the field in a vehicle, tearing up grass in the outfield and digging up the dirt infield.
The Pam Pack is set to host a scrimmage against New Bern on Feb. 23, according to its schedule on MaxPreps.com, and the team has already begun workouts. Leggett said he doesn’t anticipate preseason preparations being impacted much by Friday night’s antics.
“It’s not as bad as I thought it would be,” said Leggett, who found out about the damage on Saturday morning. “I need to get some sand out there and level it out out there. Hopefully, I saved a little bit of grass seed. … It looks like they had most of their fun in the dirt.”
Leggett said this is the first time this has happened to the field in his four years as head coach. He did recall instances of vandalism during his years as an assistant.
Leggett said he’s disappointed, but the damage shouldn’t set Washington back much as it prepares for the spring. However, maintaining the field is time consuming for him and his staff.
“It’s a year-round job. You don’t get paid a lot for field maintenance. You do it for the pride,” he said. “It’s at least a part-time job, and almost a full-time job. There’s a lot of work that goes into it. It’s really disappointing when you see somebody come out there and tear it up like that.”
Leggett said that he and the school’s administration have suspicions as to who did the damage, however, it wasn’t clear whether they would follow up through the school or law enforcement action.
