August

Tyrrell County sheriff’s deputies responded to 570 law enforcement and two fire calls inside Columbia during August, Sheriff Darryl Liverman reported recently to the town’s board of aldermen.

There were 587 law calls in July and 639 in June.

Officers issued 37 citations, 26 for traffic violations and 11 for drug or alcohol violations.

In the northwest sector of the town, as defined by Scuppernong Drive and Broad Street, officers conducted three investigations, issued 21 citations, and made one on-view arrest for assault on a female.

In the northeast quadrant, there were four investigations, three citations, two orders for arrest served (failure to appear on a charge of injury to personal property, and failure to appear on a charge of driving while license revoked); and a warrant was served for injury to personal property.

In the southwest part of town, there were six citations issued.

And in the southeast sector, officers conducted two investigations and issued seven citations.

Arrests made at the sheriff’s office included two criminal summons served (both for worthless check), three orders for arrest served (for child support, for failure to appear to answer charge of driving while license revoked, and for probation violation), and two warrants served (for communicating threats and for possession of controlled substance on prison-jail premises).

Deputies assigned to town duty drove 2,266 miles during August.

September

Tyrrell County sheriff’s officers responded to 1,067 law enforcement calls in September, Sheriff Darryl Liverman reported recently to the county commissioners.

There were 63 ambulance and 15 fire calls that month too.

Frequent activities included: Officers conducted 494 business checks, performed 119 security checks, made 122 traffic stops, served 41 court papers, replied to 39 citizen inquiries, transported 20 inmates, served 19 warrants, assisted other agencies 15 times, conducted 14 investigations, made 14 drug arrests, unlocked 14 vehicles, and assisted 10 motorists.

In addition, they responded to one assault, four careless and reckless drivers, two communicating threats, four domestic disturbances in progress, one drunk disturbance, one fraud, one holdup, eight burglar alarms, one larceny in progress and three prior larcenies, three noise disturbances, one incident of shots fired, three suspicious conditions in progress and two prior, one trauma with injury, four trespassing in progress and one prior, and one welfare check.

Officers arrested 86 individuals on 108 charges, 20 of which were drug related.

Deputies served 47 criminal and 23 civil court papers during September.

Sheriff Liverman reported that officers logged 43 and a half hours and drove 2,050 miles transporting individuals to and from places of confinement. The longest trip (570 miles) was to fetch a detained person from Forsyth County to Dare County.

The cost of housing 21 men and three women in the Dare County Detention Center was $9,500.

The sheriff and four other officers received a total of 323 hours of in-service training, and officers drove 16,812 miles on duty during September.

November

Tyrrell County sheriff’s deputies responded to 546 law enforcement calls inside Columbia during November, Sheriff Darryl Liverman reported to the town’s board of aldermen on December 4.

Law calls in October amounted to 586 and 656 in September.

There were 23 ambulance and no fire calls in November compared with 30 ambulance and three fire calls in October.

Officers conducted one investigation and issued two citations in the northwest sector of the town, as described by Scuppernong Drive and Broad Street. The citations were for speeding 57 miles an hour in a 35-mph zone and for speeding 61/35.

The northeast section saw seven investigations, six citations, and two on-view arrests (for possession of cocaine and for possession of drug paraphernalia). The citations were for driving license revoked, no operator’s license (two incidents), possession of drug paraphernalia, misdemeanor possession of marijuana, and for speeding 54/35.

There was one investigation in the southwest quadrant.

And officers conducted one investigation, issued six citations, and made one on-view arrest (for misdemeanor larceny) in the southeast section. The citations were for impeding traffic, possession of drug paraphernalia, misdemeanor possession [less than one-half ounce] of marijuana (two incidents), speeding 50/35, and speeding 53/35.

Arrests made at the sheriff’s office were two orders for arrest served (for failure to appear and for discharge of a firearm inside city limits and injury to personal property); and two warrants were served for domestic violence protection order violation and for simple assault.

Officers assigned to the town drove 1,687 miles on duty during November.
