The temperature in Tyrrell County climbed above 32 degrees about 11 a.m. on Monday, January 8, ending 107 hours of subfreezing weather that began with 3-4 inches of snow in the pre-dawn hours on  January 4.

When the two-hour snowfall ended, a full moon, at its perigee, “on the breast of the new-fallen snow gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below.” 

2017 ended with a high temperature of 32 degrees, New Year’s Day got up to 29, January 2 fell a degree short with a high of 28 under sunny skies and stiff northeast wind.

January 3 dawned sunny with a heavy frost and 22 degrees. They sky was soon overcast, but the thermometer soared to 38 in early afternoon. Rain started about 8 p.m. and turned to snow after midnight.

The sun came up on January 4 with 3-4 inches of snow on the ground and a stiff breeze piling up small drifts here and there. The temperature reached 29 at noon and stayed there until sunset.

Sunrise on January 5 was in a clear sky, and the temperature was 17 degrees, which climbed to 27 by 1 p.m., then slipped back toward dark.

Saturday, January 6, dawned bright and sunny with thermometer at 17 dgreees. It was sunny and calm all day, and the mercury topped at 24 around 2 p.m.

The temp was 17 at sunrise on Sunday under sunny sky and calm wind. It rose to 24 by 4 p.m. and back into the teens shortly after sunset.

Monday dawned with the thermometer at 19 degrees under cloudy sky and calm wind. It rose to 30 at 10:30 a.m., passed the freezing mark about 11, and stood at 35 at 11:30 a.m. The long freeze was over.
