In response to the ruling by a panel of federal judges that North Carolina Republicans unconstitutionally gerrymandered the state’s congressional map, DNC Vice Chair of Civic Engagement and Voter Participation Karen Carter Peterson released the following statement:

“Today’s ruling is a victory for North Carolina voters and our democracy. In North Carolina and across the country, Republicans have gerrymandered congressional maps to rig the system in their favor and wasted taxpayer dollars defending their unconstitutional actions in court.

“Thankfully, these judges saw right through this transparent and disgraceful attempt to suppress voting rights, writing that North Carolina Republicans were trying to achieve ‘Republican domination’ at the expense of a fair voting system.

“Voters should pick their representatives, not the other way around. And Democrats will continue to hold Republicans accountable as we fight to protect the one right that preserves all others — the right to vote.”
