Panthers hang on at Tarboro

TARBORO — Northside endured some late sharpshooting from Tarboro, but converted on its chances at the free-throw line in a 72-69 road win on Tuesday. The win keeps the Panthers in the driver’s seat atop the 1-A Coastal Plains Conference going into Friday’s matchup with rival Southside.

Jonathan Clark led the way with 22 points. Rashod Smith and Bryson Radcliffe chipped in with 17 apiece. The trio went 15-of-17 at the charity stripe in the fourth quarter.

Clark scored 15 of Northside’s 20 points in the opening period. Braeden Cooper had three made 3-pointers in the game. The hosting Vikings outscored the Panthers, 26-19, in the fourth, but Northside was able to hang on.

 

Northside edges Lady Vikings

TARBORO — Northside won its third 1-A Coastal Plains Conference game in a row Tuesday at Tarboro. The Lady Panthers escaped with a 43-39 victory to make it three in a row away from home.

The win gives Northside some breathing room in third place in the league. The Lady Panthers return to Pinetown Friday to host Southside, giving them a chance to further entrench themselves in the top three.

 

Lady Pack steals one from South Lenoir

Washington had been outscored in each of the first three quarters Tuesday at home against South Lenoir. It seemed to flip a switch by pounding the Lady Blue Devils, 17-6, in the fourth period en route to a 51-46 victory.

The Lady Pack had slipped up in a 48-30 loss at South Lenoir on Jan. 2. This win makes it four straight and builds some separation between Washington and third-place South Lenoir.

Washington traveled to North Lenoir on Wednesday. It will wrap up the season with a trip to Kinston on Tuesday and a home matchup with West Craven on Feb. 9.

 

Lady Seahawks overwhelmed at Riverside

WILLIAMSTON — Southside found a groove in the third quarter, but Riverside’s 50-12 halftime lead proved far too much to overcome on Tuesday. The Lady Knights further cemented themselves as the second best in the 1-A Coastal Plains Conference with a 68-24 thumping of Southside.

Michaela Dixon led the way with 13 points for the Lady Seahawks. She was 4-of-5 from behind the arc. She also hauled in six reounds.

Symone Ruffin had six points and Laquisha Woolard added five.

Southside will look to avenge Monday’s home loss to Northside when it travels to Pinetown Friday for a rematch.

 

Riverside clips Seahawks

WILLIAMSTON — Riverside pitched a second-quarter shutout as it cruised past Southside, 69-28, on Tuesday. The loss leaves the Seahawks still searching for their first win in the 1-A Coastal Plains Conference.

The Knights built a 40-11 halftime lead, which they were able to ride out. They had three scorers in double figures.

Southside’s slate doesn’t get any easier. It heads to Northside on Friday before completing the conference stretch with South Creek and Tarboro.
