Local Boy Scouts will be scouting for food, of the canned variety.

Saturday, the scouts will launch a food drive, visiting hundreds of neighborhoods across eastern North Carolina and looking for non-perishable food items to collect for local food banks.

“The cold winter months are often a difficult time for those without access to steady food supplies, and food pantries often struggle to keep up with the increased demand, “Doug Brown, Scout executive for the East Carolina Council, wrote in a press release. “The Boy Scouts are inviting our neighbors to join us in the ‘Good Turn for America’ by donating food to our drive, so that we can all help to ensure that no one goes hungry this winter.”

This weekend, scouts will distribute door hangers promoting the drive throughout neighborhoods and other residential areas. If a home receives a door hanger promoting the drive, residents are encouraged to place a bag filled with non-perishable foods items on their porch on the following Saturday, Feb. 10.

“Scouts will return to the neighborhoods on that day to collect the items and transport them to local food banks. As a way of saying thank you, each door hanger includes a coupon redeemable at participating Hardee’s restaurants,” the press release stated.

“Good Turn for America” is a 30-year-old tradition for the Boy Scouts. During each year’s food drive, scouts from the East Carolina Council will usually pick up more than 70,000 pounds of food to distribute to the 27 food pantries in eastern North Carolina—food pantries such as Eagle’s Wings in Washington.

For Brown, the event is just one of many ways Boy Scouts contribute to their communities: “There are lots of different things a young man can do on a Saturday morning. We like to say that Scouts do things that matter.”
