Easier Step to an Online Bachelor’s at ECU

WASHINGTON — Transferring to a bachelor’s degree for students at Beaufort County Community College will get easier this year. BCCC is adding a concentration to their information technology degree for students moving on to East Carolina University’s Bachelor of Science in Industrial Technology program. The concentration will be in place for the fall 2018 semester.

The BSIT program at ECU is an associate’s degree completion program open to community college degrees in various fields, including information technology. The degree completion program directly applies both general education and associate’s degree specific courses toward the BSIT degree in information computer technology at ECU.

BCCC students already qualify for this program, but under current requirements, they can only directly transfer about 48 out of the maximum of 60 credit hours towards the degree. The new IT degree concentration closes that gap and allows students to transfer the maximum 60 credits to ECU. Students can be complete the degree completely online, so it works well for people who are advancing their education while working.

“We worked with the ECU academic advisor for the program to ensure students maximize their transfer credits while minimizing their time to complete their bachelor’s degree,” explained Brian Miller, lead instructor for information technology at BCCC.

This concentration directly targets students who plan to continue their education towards a Bachelor’s degree, whether in the following semester or years later.

“Our instructors in information technology understand that part of our diverse student population needs a direct path to employment,” said Miller, “while others are looking for a cost-effective path to complete their bachelor’s degree. That has been the goal of adding multiple concentrations within BCCC’s information technology degree.”

This transfer program is open to any existing BCCC and Beaufort County Early College High School student. Students can enroll in the concentration of their choice starting the fall 2018 semester, with Miller advising students in the BSIT concentration.
