The Washington (evening) Rotary Club met Thursday at the Washington Yacht & Country Club.

Following a time for fellowship in the Upper Deck, the members and guests assembled in the Pamlico Room.

Club president Todd Williamson called the meeting to order, after which the Pledge of Allegiance was recited, “America the Beautiful” was sung, and a blessing was offered.

After the meal announcements were made, members were reminded of the annual oyster roast set for Feb. 15. Abbott Tunstall was welcomed as a guest.

Program chairman Sandy Mitchell introduced the Rev. Polk Culpepper, who gave an informative presentation about the Open Door Community Center, which supporters hope will soon become a reality here in Beaufort County.

Each year in Beaufort County almost 100 women and children are homeless, finding themselves completely without shelter of any kind, or they live temporarily with neighbors or extended family, or even sleeping in cars.

Open Door Community Center is a non-profit 501 (c)(3) organization established in 2016 by a group of volunteers representing churches, community service organizations, civic groups and concerned citizens. Its mission is to provide safe shelter to Beaufort County women and children in need. Its goal is to create a place that will provide referrals to services so needed by these people.

Board chairperson Dot Moate also spoke and provided insights into the adversities faced by these women and children.

The presentations of Culpepper and Moate were well received by club members.

A contribution to the Center was made by the club. Following the recitation of the Rotary Four-Way Test, President Williamson adjourned the meeting.
