The Spurs and Bucks were tied 40-40 with eight seconds left in Sunday’s 13-16 boys’ championship game. Devon Thigpen stole the Spurs’ inbound pass and went the other away for an uncontested layup.

The final seconds ticked off, and the basket proved decisive in the Bucks’ 42-40 title win. The Spurs rallied down the stretch to draw even after trailing by as many as eight points. Jahem Spencer had a layup, and Kanye Moore’s efforts at the free-throw line fueled a 6-0 spurt that put them within a shot, 38-36.

It was Spencer’s foul shots down the stretch that tied the game.

Both teams struggled to find a rhythm in the first quarter. They were getting to the basket, but couldn’t convert on chances. Spencer’s 3-pointer at the end of the opening period sent the Spurs into the second with a 7-4 lead.

Then the Bucks hit their stride. Josh Glaspie’s layup sparked a run that saw his team score the first 12 points in the second. Nick Rawls and Jadyn Thomasson scored during the surge, too.

That forced the Spurs to call a timeout. They came out with six unanswered — four of which were scored by Jameek Spencer — to cut the Bucks’ lead to 18-13 at halftime.

Moore and Jaquan Taylor asserted themselves inside to help the Spurs continue to close in on the Bucks. Taylor’s put back late in the period put them within striking distance, 25-24, heading into the fourth.

Glaspie and Rawls responded, though, to help the Bucks create some separation early in the fourth. It was enough to make sure that, while the Spurs managed to tie the game, the Bucks would never trail after the early portions of the second quarter.
