The Rotary Club of Cebu, Philippines, found its area faced with a number of children in need of expensive heart operations. Rather than just wring their hands, they stepped up their efforts to raise funds to provide the needed operations by organizing runs and triathlon races. Using these races for life, “We earned more than $42,000 in our first run,” said Angel Martinez, president of the Cebu Rotary Club. More than 2,000 runners took on courses of 3, 8 or 16 kilometers, as well as another 345 athletes who participated in the triathlon. To date, the club has funded about 60 heart operations for needy children in the region. Rotarians around the world, like these in the Philippines, refuse to accept the idea of hopelessness for children or anyone else.
