Getting one’s hair cut might not be the first thing that comes to mind when it comes to taking care of the health of Beaufort County’s rivers, but during the month of April, the two will go hand in hand at Capelli Salon on Market Street.

In addition to donating ten percent of service sales in April, the salon will also have pledge cards available on site for those who want to make a donation. Any donations made at the salon, either through sales or pledges, will also generate 100 percent matching funds.

“We are an Aveda concept salon,” Capelli owner Lisa Gargaro said. “With that come certain responsibilities and one of those is to participate with Earth Month.”

Together, the staff chose to donate a portion of their proceeds to Sound Rivers. In addition to this fundraiser, the salon also gives donations of gift cards regularly to community organizations.

“Most of the time, if it’s a public service entity and they have raffles and fundraising, I always donate a salon gift certificate,” Gargaro said.

Sound Rivers works to ensure the health of the Tar, Pamlico and Neuse Rivers through education, outreach and water-quality monitoring. With more waterfront than any other coastal North Carolina County, the Tar and Pamlico Rivers are two of Beaufort County’s most important and defining features.

“We’re extremely excited to be working with Lisa and the entire staff of Capelli Salon to promote Earth Month and talk about the importance of clean water,” Sound Waters Director Heather Deck said.

For those who might be established at another salon, Gargaro encourages them to still pay Capelli a visit to help support Sound Rivers.

“This is going on the entire month of April and even if you’re not getting your hair cut or worked on, you can still come in and make a pledge,” Gargaro said. “We would encourage everybody to do that.”
