Virginia Iris (Iris virginica) is a native wildflower that only occurs in wetlands. Growing to a height of two feet, it only blooms well in full sunlight. The plant spreads by underground rhizomes, forming large, circular colonies. Blooming now through May, Virginia Iris can be seen on Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge, including Walter B. Jones Sr. Center for the Sounds in Columbia.
