CHOCOWINITY—Fueled by three award-winning athletes and an award-winning coach, the Seahawks blew away the competition en route to winning both the girls’ and boys’ titles at the Coastal Plains 1A Conference Championship held at Southside High School on Wednesday.
The Lady Seahawks, led by Eminey Redmond and Jacqueline Wood, scored 156 points to win the championship. Finishing behind them were Pamlico County (71), Tarboro (67), Northside (62), Jones Senior (60), South Creek (58) and Riverside (51).
Jonquil Haywood helped guide Southside’s boys’ team to victory with 201 points. Tarboro (109) took second, followed by Pamlico County (49), South Creek (46), Northside (29), Jones Senior (18) and Riverside (16).
Redmond, the defending 1A state champion in the long jump, was named the Girl’ Track and Field MVP at the end of Wednesday’s meet. Wood, who owns the Southside school record in both the 100 and 200-meter dashes, was named the Girls’ Track MVP as well. Accompanying them in winning an award was Haywood. The junior, who runs in the 400, 800 and anchors the 4×800 relay, was named the Boys’ Track MVP. Southside coach Andrea Quinerly was also named Coach of the Year for both the girls’ and boys’ teams.
The Seahawks were dominant throughout the 2018 track and field season. Their success is plain to see when looking at who’s going to the 1A East Regional meet. Spearheaded by the trio of Redmond, Wood and Haywood, Southside will be sending over 30 athletes to regionals. The NCHSAA 1A East Regional takes place on May 11 at Greene Central in Snow Hill, NC.
