Roughton’s Store

ROUGHTON’S STORE AT FORT LANDING was busy when U.S. 64 motorists waited for the ferry to take them across Alligator River to East Lake.  To ward off inquisitive tourists Roughton posted a sign: “Don’t ask me anything because if I knew anything I wouldn’t be here.” The highway was moved soon after World War II to shorten the ferry trip to 30 minutes and accommodate deeper-draft ferries that carried 22 cars, and Roughton’s store closed forever.
