GREENVILLE ­­— The Washington Yacht & Country Club’s youth golf team played in its second match of the Eastern North Carolina Junior Golf League’s season at Bradford Creek Public Golf Course last Monday, with seven team members finishing in the top five among the six age groups.

Sophie Berry placed the highest on the team, shooting 46 over nine holes to finish second among the girls 11 and under. Sally Ross (64), playing in her first-ever tournament, placed fourth in the same division. Among the girls ages 12-13, Anna Claire Bilbro (52) came in fourth and Lilly Davis (54) placed fifth.

Luke Ross (42) finished third among the boys 11 and under, Rob Bergevin (44) placed fourth among boys ages 12-13 and Caedon Lyons (38) tied for third in the division for 14-and-15-year-old boys.

Peg Bodie, of the Washington Yacht & Country Club, coaches the team of 31 kids, which meets for practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the club. She said the league is meant to be more instructional and enjoyed seeing the improvement her players made from their first match of the season to the second last Monday, noting that her team has some really nice golfers.

“The league is more geared to kids who want to learn how to play,” Bodie said. “It’s a good place for the kids to start playing competitively, if that’s what they want to do.”

Bodie said she goes over as much as she can with the kids, some as young as seven, on her team. She starts with the basics, going over the rules and golf etiquette, before moving on to teaching them how to be better golfers.

Lyons was one of the golfers Bodie mentioned as having raised his game since joining the league.

“Caedon Lyons has shown a lot of improvement over the last couple of years,” Bodie said. “He also competes in other tournaments, not just this league. He plays all over the state.”

The team will next compete at Ironwood Golf & Country Club in Greenville on July 9.
