Night jumps return to Skydive Little Washington

Saturday night promises a bright full moon, making the evening perfect for an activity rarely associated with celestial events — skydiving.

At Skydive Little Washington, night jumps are offered a few times throughout the year, typically during full moons to allow for better visibility. This weekend happens to be one of those times.

In the United States, skydiving licenses are broken into four categories — A, B, C and D. In order to obtain one’s D license, skydivers must complete at least two night jumps, a requirement that can be fulfilled during the event.

“The candidates have to do two of them,” Skydive Little Washington owner Jeff Plisko said. “The first one has to be a solo and the second one has to be a relative work skydive, where you’re actually jumping with someone else in close proximity and doing grips. Then after that we just have fun, dressing up in light suits with LEDs on us.”

While participants in the night jumps are required to have at least met the requirements for their B license, Plisko says that spectators are always more than welcome during the event.

“We love spectators,” Plisko said. “Normally during the daytime on the weekends, around lunch time, I throw something on the grill and offer it to spectators. This weekend, we’ll have hotdogs, chips and coffee for any spectators that want to come out and watch.”

The night jumps take place Saturday from 9 p.m. to midnight at Washington-Warren Field Airport. For more information on the offerings at Skydive Little Washington, visit www.skydivelittlewashington.com or call 252-495-1496.
