Reaching back across the centuries, the Washington Waterfront Underground Railroad Museum offers visitors a glimpse back in time and an opportunity to learn about an often-unexplored chapter of American History.

With a focus on the methods used by freedom seekers to escape slavery, the museum offers a wealth of information on the men and women who dared to flee bondage in the face of overwhelming adversity, and the abolitionists who risked everything to help them get away.

On Sunday evening, area residents are invited to join the Washington Waterfront Underground Railroad Museum for “A Night on the Underground Railroad,” the museum’s first fundraiser of the year.

Featuring storytelling, songs and lessons on the Underground Railroad, the event promises to be an engaging and educational affair for people of all ages.

As an added attraction, local author Bunyon Keys will also be on hand during the event to offer knowledge on some of Beaufort County’s oldest African-American families, dating back more than 300 years. Keys will also be discussing and signing copies of his latest book, a family history entitled, “Over 225 years of Keys/Keyes: Families in Eastern North Carolina”

“A Night on the Underground Railroad” will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday evening at the Washington Civic Center, located at 110 Gladden Street. Admission to the event is $10 per person.
