The first days of the early start at Columbia High School were successful, Principal Bill Ziegler reported. “Some students were excited, others wary and almost all a bit tired!”

There are 61 freshmen, 44 sophomores, 39 juniors, 32 seniors, and 13 fifth-year students at CHS; and 71 students are enrolled in over 150 Beaufort County Community College courses, he said.

Students have adjusted to the new security system quickly and have settled back into school routines, Ziegler stated. “Without a doubt, there is a positive atmosphere and a buzz of excitement shared by the faculty, staff, parents and students ready for a great school year.”

The school district on August 3 received notification of a grant award. “We are excited that we will now have two school resource officers (SROs) during the 2018-19 school year; one for each campus – PreK-5 and 6-13,” said interim superintendent Dr. Travis Twiford.

The SROs work through a collaborative effort between the school system and the Tyrrell County Sheriff’s Office.

Myra Shoffner, child nutrition director, applied for and received an $18,208 grant to provide healthy afternoon snacks for students at Tyrrell Elementary School. Her objective is to introduce students to a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables that they might not otherwise try. The students will initially receive the snack twice per week.
