Abby Jarvis earned the Girl Scout Silver Award for her project to help medical labs that draw blood from children. Recognizing that children are nervous when faced with the drawing of blood, Abby created felt finger puppets that she sewed by hand.
She delivered 60 of these handmade jungle animals and puppies to three labs —Washington Pediatrics, the ECU Pediatric Specialty Care Clinic and the ECU Family Medicine Clinic.
The labs in turn shared the puppets with the children who soon were more interested in the puppets than with the drawing of blood. She received high praise from each of the Clinics for helping to alleviate the childrens’ feelings of fear.
Jarvis was awarded her certificate and Silver pin by the Girl Scouts N.C. Coastal Pines Division in Raleigh. She is a rising Eighth grade student at Bath Elementary and is a member of Troop 3556 under the leadership of Hope Woolard.
The Silver Award is the second highest award that a girl scout can obtain and the highest a cadette can achieve. Abby achieved the Bronze Award prior to the Silver Award by creating about 40 Happy Bags filled with toys and stuffed animals for new foster children, presenting them to the Beaufort County Department of Social Services.
Abby is the granddaughter of Billy and Phyllis Jarvis of Bath, and Buster and Natalie McKeel of Blounts Creek.
