Cyprus Landing events to benefit Shepard Cancer Foundation

CHOCOWINITY — Throughout the summer, pink and purple ribbons have adorned mailboxes and the front facades of Beaufort County businesses and residences, each indicating a donation to the Shepard Cancer Foundation in support of the Marion Shepard Cancer Center.

This weekend, area residents will have two more opportunities to give to the Foundation during a pair of events taking place at Cypress Landing Golf Club. This Friday, beginning at 6 p.m., the golf club will host its annual Hope and Heroes Walk, followed on Sunday by the annual Let’s Tee it Up for a Cure golf tournament.

“I think everyone has been touched with cancer in one way or another,” Hope and Heroes Walk organizer Mary Jane Cooke said. “This is an opportunity to help out people in need. With the wonderful cancer center we have down in Washington, it certainly benefits us all, and we’re just so thankful that they’re here.”

The walk is open to anyone who wishes to participate, and registration for the event is $20. The first 200 registrants will receive a T-shirt after submitting their entry form. All proceeds will benefit the Shepard Cancer Foundation.

“It’s a 1.3- or three-mile walk on the Cypress Landing Golf Course,” Cooke said. “Afterwards there will be pizza and drinks available. Never 2 Late, our wonderful band over in Cypress Landing, will be playing.”

Since the walk began a few years back, Cooke says the participation has grown steadily, with the community showing up in force and giving generously. Some people who attend the event don’t even walk — they just offer donations.

“We’ve been lucky to have so many people showing up and volunteering with this event,” Cooke said.

While the walkers will have the course on Friday evening, the golfers will have their chance to play a round on Sunday afternoon during the Let’s Tee it Up for a Cure Tournament. The tournament kicks off at 1 p.m. with a shotgun start and the format will be captain’s choice. The entry fee for the tournament is $75 per person.
