From Tyrrell County Public Library
Since the beginning of the 20th Century, essential oils have gained popularity as people have rediscovered their medicinal properties and benefits. Originally, essential oils (EO’s) were “Man’s First Medicine.” According to ancient text and inscriptions, EO’s were used for spiritual, medicinal, and cleansing properties. These writings included various extraction methods for the oils and recipes. This evidence supports the concept that essential oils played an important role during ancient times.
Today, with the advances in technology, essential oils have become more pure. EO’s have antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, and antiseptic properties, which makes them useful for many medical purposes. In addition, essential oils are found in the cosmetic and beauty industry, cleaning supplies, and as food additives for the food industry. These potent oils are all-encompassing, but safety issues can be a concern since these oils are very concentrated. Casually researching the Internet can result in misinformation that could possibly lead to sensitivities, allergies and burns. Essential oils are “our gift from nature,” but we need to respect their potency and learn how to use them properly to assure safety and preservation of their therapeutic properties.
The Tyrrell County Public Library will be starting an Essential Oil Program with the assistance of Ron Cerimele, Angela L. Brickhouse, Shari Crail, and Renee Hodges beginning on Thursday, September 13th. These classes will take place the second Thursday of each month from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. The purpose of these sessions will provide basic information on history; advice on selecting a reputable company and quality oils; single oils and oil blends; carrier oils; various methods of usage; safety practices; and dilution rates including measurements. There will also be an opportunity to share favorite recipes and create some DIY projects that could be used at home, or as gifts. These monthly meetings will be based on a “Let’s Learn Together” format as information is shared between one another.
If you have never used any essential oils and are intrigued by the thought of learning how to use them, if you consider yourself an EO beginner, or if you are an experienced user of these precious oils, then give the library a call at 252-796-3771 to sign up for this program. This will be a great opportunity for you to learn some important information about essential oils, share ideas and re-acquaint yourself with everything that your local library has to offer.
