Tyrrell County Schools lost six days of instruction on account of Hurricane Florence and the subsequent roadway flooding in many parts of the county. No classes were held Sept. 12-19.

State law requires school districts to provide a minimum of 185 days or 1,025 hours of instruction in the academic year.

Meanwhile, teachers are 10-month employees of the school district, approximately August 15 to June 15, so students must complete the required number of days or hours of instruction within those 10 months of teacher employment.

Once the Tyrrell County Board of Education determines the schedule for making up the six missed days, a revised calendar will be posted on the school district’s website.

“Many people make travel plans after school calendars are established, and we understand that changes in the calendar create schedule conflicts for those people,” said Dr. Travis Twiford, interim superintendent. “Every attempt will be made to make the necessary calendar adjustments as unobtrusive as possible.”

He also thanked the TCS Staff and community families “for the acts of support and kindness displayed during this event. Our students have returned to school full of energy and excitement.”
