While Beaufort County residents continue putting the bad memories of Hurricane Florence behind them, one business in Washington is still doing its part to help those in need.

At the Cottage Junkies and Graceful Goose, the store has raised more than $7,500 in the past month to assist local businesses, nonprofits and individuals in need after the storm — all through the sale of some stylish T-shirts designed by Mary Bell Johnson. Another local business, Engraver’s World Apparel, generously covered the cost of producing the shirts.

“My sister (Brooke Newman) and I wanted to do something for our community after Hurricane Florence hit,” Cottage Junkies owner Landis Pinkham said. “Basically, this has given us money to help so many people in need. We did about 750 shirts in total.”

As a result of the fundraisers, checks have been disbursed to a number of places in Washington, Belhaven and New Bern. Among the many businesses and entities helped, the fundraiser has benefited Zion Shelter and Kitchen in Washington and Carryout By Chrislyn. While the former suffered considerable damage during the storm, the latter donated thousands of meals during hurricane relief efforts throughout the region.

“We reached out to a lot of people, not just in Washington and Beaufort County, but in Craven County and New Bern, as well,” Pinkham said. “It’s something we wanted to do to give back, and we were successfully able to do that. It’s been a humbling experience.”

The stylish shirts are still for sale at Cottage Junkies for $20, with sizes available from small to XXL. All proceeds will go to help local people and businesses impacted by the hurricane.
