For those wishing to pay tribute to America’s men and women in uniform this Veterans Day weekend, there is no shortage of ways to do so. Throughout Beaufort County, nearly a dozen events will honor those who have served starting today and through weekend.

In Washington today, the Washington High School JROTC and band will host special performances at two CresCom Bank branches in Washington, with festivities at 1311 Carolina Avenue from 11 a.m. to noon, then at the 300 N. Market St. branch from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.. Veterans will share stories and Bill’s Hotdogs will be serving up food.

A number of years ago, former Bath Elementary Principal and Korean War Veteran Jack Wallace helped bring a Veterans Day ceremony to BES. The school hosts its annual celebration beginning at 9:30 a.m. today. The event will feature the presentation of colors by the Northside High School JROTC, a flag folding ceremony and the laying of a wreath in memory of Bath Elementary and Bath High School alumni who have died in the line of duty. This year’s ceremony will also serve as a tribute to Wallace, who died earlier this week. The event is open to the public.

At 11 a.m. Saturday, the American Legion Post 15 Auxiliary will host its annual Veterans Day observance at Veterans Memorial Park on East Third Street in Washington. The event will feature recognition of area veterans and a keynote speaker.

In Aurora, a special event will take place at noon Saturday. The Aurora Richland Township Chamber of Commerce will host a dedication for a new veterans memorial in the park at the Aurora Fossil Museum. Billy Thompson, a World War II veteran, will speak about his service and share memorabilia from the war. Refreshments will be served afterward and veterans can RSVP to 252-322-4405.

Also on Saturday, the Washington Garden Club and The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 15 will hold a Blue Star Highway dedication ceremony at the N.C. Highway 17 rest stop in Chocowinity. The program will commence at 2:30 p.m.

At Arts of the Pamlico, two Veterans Day events are set to take the stage this weekend. On Saturday at the Turnage Theatre, Rock the Pamlico will host a special concert benefiting the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 48. Greenville Drums and Pipes will host the opening ceremony, followed by performances by Simply Southern Band, CC&T Band and The Patriots. Cost is $10 at the door for the general public and veterans pay $5. There will be a silent auction at the theater from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and the concert begins with the posting of the colors at 3 p.m.

A second concert is scheduled at the Turnage on Sunday, beginning at 3 p.m. The Beaufort County Orchestra will play a medley of patriotic American tunes. While the concert is free, donations are welcome.

In Bath, and throughout the country on Sunday, a number of churches will commemorate the centennial anniversary of the conclusion of World War I with the ringing of bells at 11 a.m. on Sunday, the 11^th hour of the 11^th day of the 11^th month. Residents and churches are encouraged to participate in this Bells of Peace event.

On Monday, the DAV will honor veterans during a ceremony at Ridgewood manor nursing home, and the group will host a forget-me-not fundraiser at Walmart on Sunday and Monday.
