A traffic accident involving an all terrain vehicle and a dump truck left one person dead on Monday afternoon. The accident occurred on Frederick Road, near Chocowinity, at approximately 12:50 p.m. Monday.

According to the N.C. Highway Patrol 1st Sgt. Gary Brown, the ATV and the dump truck were both traveling north on Fredrick Road when the driver of the ATV lost control of the vehicle. Brown said the driver of the truck moved left of center in an attempt to avoid the ATV but the ATV also moved left of center, resulting in a collision.

The front right side of the dump truck struck the ATV, causing the 4-wheeler to flip in a nearby ditch. Brown said the driver of the ATV was ejected and landed in the roadway.

According to North Carolina state law, it is illegal to operate an ATV on public roadways except for the purpose of crossing the road. Brown said the driver of the ATV was not wearing a helmet.
