ROPER — William Hendrick “Bill” Swart, 90 of Roper died Wednesday, November 21, 2018 at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.
Born February 22, 1928 in New Hanover County he was the son of the late Dirk Swart, Jr. and Danie Southerland Swart and was preceded in death by his son, William H. Swart, Jr.; two brothers and a sister. Bill attended New Hanover High School where he played football and later received a scholarship to North Carolina State University to play football. He graduated from North Carolina State University with a degree in Horticulture in 1952. He was drafted in the U.S. Army and commissioned as a second lieutenant and served during the Korean Conflict. Following his service he met and married Margie Moore of Raleigh with whom he shared many wonderful places to live until settling in Pea Ridge Community of Washington County.
Bill worked for the North Carolina Department of Corrections in land management, food service and later forestry. He later took the position of operations manager with First Colony Farms and eventually started The Bill Swart Land Management Company and worked until his retirement at the age of 80.
His family includes his wife of 67 years Margie Moore Swart of Roper; daughter, Rebecca A. Swart of Edenton; sons, John H. Swart and wife Michele of Fuquay-Varina, James K. Swart of College Station, TX. and Clifford P. Swart and wife Tonya of
Plymouth, N.C.; sisters, Alma Field of Minneapolis, MN., Helen Simmons of Wilmington and June Tilden of Atkinson; brother, Cornelius Swart of Raleigh; grandchildren, Derek, Jenna, Will, Sydney, Olivia, Traveona, Demetrius and Janiysia; great grandchildren, Lily, Case, Cipie, Lucy, Ansel and Hardie.
Memorial service will be held Sunday, November 25, 2018 at 7 p.m. at Maitland Funeral Home, Plymouth with Thomas Biggs officiating. Family will receive friends on Sunday, November 25, 2018, following the service at the funeral home and other times at the residence.
